Should We Let Toddler Decide?

So, we are experiencing a bit of a "built-in delay" on the Happy Headache.  Apparently, demolition exposed some "existing conditions" that needed to be analyzed by a structural engineer and we are waiting on this guy's report to proceed.

So, in the meantime, Husband and I accompanied our incomparable architect (Gordon Kahn) on a trip to look at hardwood floor options.  We came home with some fun samples which Toddler immediately turned into makeshift hardwood floor skates.  And, unlike her waffling parents, she seems to know what she likes.  As you see, she is leaning toward the darker breeds.  Should we let her decide?  Sure, she's diminutive.  But she's also decisive. But truth be told if we had let her make all tough decisions, we'd probably have a seven-month-old named Dora.

In all seriousness, do you guys like light hardwood floors or darker ones?  I know.  This decision is not going to dictate future levels of happiness, but it seems like a relatively big call. So help me make it. Pretty please.

  1. Hi A!
Very busy week at work but now that I am catching up on the week's posts looks like you are getting some good commenters, yay! My two cents on the flooring issue having had lighter floors and darker is to go darker but not darkest. I highly recommend a Minwax shade, special walnut, that looks like the one in toddler's right hand, that we selected when we redid our circa 1931 floors 6 years ago. The color is beautiful but not so dark that you see every scratch. And I have a very active almost 5 yo boy that likes to "move things" and our floors still look pretty great. So, that's my vote! Have a great weekend!

  2. Depends on the size of the room and the amount of natural light it receives. With a smaller room or a room that is dark, I would go for a lighter wood.Persoanlly, I like the ones with golden tones- they make the room seem warmer.

  3. I vote for either the washed white look (to the left in the picture, not under toddler's hands) or the toddler choice to the right -- the warmer, more golden brown.

And light does have everything to do with it. I chose dark floors for my cottagey house, and while I love them, they do show everything and they are a bit dark for the house. I would go lighter if I were to do it again.
